'My Peace I Give You'

10 May 2026

The following piece was first written for the May 10, 2026 pew sheet at St Augustine’s Anglican Church. I share it here again in the hope that it may continue to encourage and bless.

In a world like ours – and in lives like ours – it can be tempting to conclude that peace little more than an illusion. We see trouble in the world, we carry burdens in our own hearts, and anxiety often fills our minds. It is no surprise, then, that some people are drawn toward discouragement, even despair. How can we speak of peace when life feels anything but peaceful? Yet this question leads us to a deeper one: what is the peace that Jesus Christ offers? First, we must be realistic. The Christian faith does not ask us to pretend that suffering does not exist. We are not invited to imagine a trouble-free life, because such a life simply does not exist in this world. Instead, we are called to live honestly within the reality we are given – this life, with its joys and its sorrows. It is precisely in this context that Jesus offers his peace. His peace is not the absence of trouble, but something that meets us within it. In fact, we only truly long for peace because we know what it is to be troubled. Our experience of restlessness awakens our desire for something deeper, more lasting, more whole. And what a gift it is that Jesus comes to us with this offer. Without him, we would be left to navigate a broken world on our own – uncertain, burdened and alone. But he does not leave us to ourselves. He comes near, and he speaks peace. This peace, as Apostle Paul writes, 'passes all understanding.' It may seem vague or even implausible to those who do not believe. But for those who trust in God, it becomes a lived reality – a quiet, steady assurance rooted not in circumstances, but in relationship. And so, the doorway into this peace is faith. It is a turning toward Jesus in trust, often expressed in simple, honest prayer: 'Lord Jesus, I come to you humbly, acknowledging you as Lord. Thank you for offering me peace through your saving love. Help me to turn from darkness and walk in your light. Fill me with your Holy Spirit, and grant me your peace. Amen.' Such a prayer, offered sincerely, opens the heart to the peace that on Christ can give.
