One God in Three Persons

31 May 2026

The following piece was first written for the May 31, 2026 pew sheet at St Augustine’s Anglican Church. I share it here again in the hope that it may continue to encourage and bless.

This Sunday, churches around the world mark Trinity Sunday – a day dedicated to celebrating one of the most foundational truths of our faith: the Holy Trinity. While it might sound like a complex theological concept, it is at the very heart of how we understand who God is and how He relates to us. When we read Scripture, we are constantly confronted with a beautiful reality. The one true God, the eternal Creator of the universe, is not a solitary being existing in isolation. Instead, God's oneness is uniquely beautiful because He exists eternally as a perfect community of three distinct divine Persons: the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Admittedly, this immediately confronts our human logic. How can God be both completely one and genuinely three? We must boldly affirm that the Trinity is a profound mystery. It defies our limited human understanding – though it is certainly no mystery to God! Yet, as with many profound realities in life, we must resist the temptation to assume that just because something is beyond our logic, it cannot be true. Instead, we are called to hold this mystery in faith. The implications of a triune God are life-changing for us. Genesis tells us we are made in God's image and likeness. Therefore, if the God who designed us in inherently relational – a loving community within Himself – it makes perfect sense that we are incurably communal creatures too. 'No man is an island,' as the poet John Dunne famously wrote. We see this truth women into the very fabric of our lives, most clearly in the unity of the family. Whether by blood or by bond, family is meant to be a micro-community of love, care and lifelong commitment. This Trinity Sunday, let us celebrate the perfect community of the Godhead, and pray that our own lives, families and church community may mirror His eternal love.
